Crafting Milestone Hit: Functioning Experimenting. As you can see from the video, the framework of virtually all crafting functions is finished.

So-- here's a new video demonstrating how crafting is progressing. It should be live on TC very soon. Give Kyle, Ritter and Link a pat on the back once again for doing such an awesome job on crafting!

3) Developer Perspective: ("Round Table")

Since most of you don’t know me yet, I figured I’d use my first bi-weekly update to introduce myself a bit as well as let you know what I’ve been working on. I’m a 23 year old Software Engineer / IT Technician from New Orleans. I’m interested in the fields of Computer Security and Forensics and am possibly considering a career change into one of those fields. I first started playing Star Wars Galaxies, back in 2003, my freshmen year of college. It was actually the first MMO that I had ever played. I remember running around before mounts, wishing I could get XP for every virtual step. I remember when player cities were implemented and my roommate and I moved our guild to one of the first player cities on Radiant. I remember when the galactic civil war was in full swing, and that city became an Imperial Strong hold. Most of all though, I remember when SOE killed the game I loved. I remember when they screwed the economy with Veteran Rewards and anti-decay kits. I remember the travesty that was the CU and the death sentence that is the NGE.

I’ve been trolling around these forums and IRC off and on since the project first went open source with Core1, mostly observing and keeping quiet. Recently, with the open sourcing of Core3, I saw a change for the better, both in the community, and the developers. That’s why I decided to get involved. I’m looking forward to helping make SWG Pre CU a reality again.

You may notice some changes when you create a new character on the Test Center now. I’ve been working on that area in the last few weeks. When creating your character, you’ll notice that the random name generator now works properly. Names are also now filtered and will tell you if you’ve entered an improper name. When you load into the world for the first time your character will no longer spawn naked. You will already be trained in the novice profession you chose when creating your character. Your character’s HAM meters will also reflect those of your chosen profession, and after the next update, your starting items will reflect those proper to your chosen profession, species, and sex.

-Bobius

Kyle's Blurb: So, I have pretty much focused exclusively on crafting for the last month or so, and it is paying off. Currently, like most people here, I am preparing for upcoming finals, and the "closure" of getting experimenting working should be enough to stop my obsession for long enough to get school work done.

Ramsey:
I just updated the small heightmaps section in the closing, outlining our problem in a bit more detail. I am really looking forward to bringing the heightmap stuff to a close. Once we have heightmaps, a lot of things will fall into place. Structure placement (which I think is pretty much done besides the part that requires heightmaps) and smoother npc movement will be added in almost instantly after heightmaps. Exciting times are ahead!

4) Closing:

Crafting: As far as crafting goes, this leaves us closer to a live implementation. What is left is a lot of data entry for the rest of the schematics, and some refinement of the crafting code to make adding all the new objects smooth. Also, as you can probably see, equations need to be tweaked still, and are not in a finished state, so if anyone is very familiar with those equations, wants to help test (May involve tedious stuff) come and join #CraftingTesting. A special thanks to all those who have participated in my little projects in #CraftingTesting, it really has help me speed up the process. You guys are the best!

Heightmaps: This is an area that is holding us back in the area of NPC movement and structure placement at the moment. We know a number of ways to implement this, but are searching for an efficient alternative to the methods we already know. Currently, we will be able to generate a huge file with all the z values for every x/y coordinate pair, but the problem we have is being able to manage all that data in a sensible way (save memory, fast request time etc). Educated idea's on how to manage huge heightmaps are welcome.

So this week we'll have some more information from Ramsey concerning Heightmap development, and possibly several more tiny updates will be edited in to this post. Stay tuned!!

Bobius' Round Table post there brought tears to my eyes, remembering the day cities when live and rushing to plop our city hall down. That city you refered to didn't happen to be Kintan by chance? I don't know if we were the very first to be founded on Radiant, but definately was one of them :)

To tell you the truth, I can't remember the name of the first player city we were in. It was on Naboo right outside of Kadaraa. We quickly moved to Lok and I believe that city was called Dark Hope or something of the sort. That's where all the action happened ;)

Totaly freak'n sweet. I have nothing but complete respect for crafters having tried it several times myself and never having the paitience to stick with it, well that and the fact that I was always so excited when I didn't trash the item I was working on I always ended up giving my creations away to whom ever asked. You folks at SWGEmu are the best. keep the dream alive and with luck the IRS won't screw me over this year and I might actualy be able to make a donation toward your efforts. All of you are the best, players included.

I'm not undertanding this really well. The client and the character is moving correctly on the map, following the surface correctly for every ups and down. So what prevents the Npcs and structures to follow the same rules?

Because the client doesn't send that data to prevent things like clipping or to determine if you can or can't shoot through a hill or a wall. It's all stored server side which is what they're trying to figure out.

So the client knows the hight and not the server? Sorry my brain is slow this friday :(
The mini radar knows this at least, it shows the exact hight where I stand. So where does it find that info from? I mean, can't the npc (the server) read its current hight from the same location, like a copy of that on the server?

Macrona
04-18-2008, 10:35 AM
It already does, that syncs the players, but that doesn't help the NPCs.

this why the tc has been down all day?

aeigis
04-18-2008, 07:45 PM
Heightmaps , oah the nightmare of tons of data on a text file for a server to sift through. Have you considered breaking the maps up into equal sized quadrants and having another server precache the zones? Then loading them when active? I've seen alot of success loading zones as active once a player is in a 4x4 radius also should take in the consideration the speed of vehicles and increasing that radius. Having another server specifically tuned to load those zones or a new thread in the current engine is your best option. Attempting to toss it on the current engine without having it run on its own is going to take server load to the max.

Sweet crafting almost done. For the height maps can't you put them in a database and access a certain amount of cords when your are placing a building? I don't think you need all of the cords from others planets when you are placing a build on a different one. Or have a database file load when you switch planets. One file per planet or something? Well you guys know more then I do I'm sure you can figure it out.

Hi there!
Follow this project but be aware! A huge number of ppl have turned gay here :D
So buy a playboy magazine everytime you feel the urge of writing " I want to give birth to your son devs!!"
Or something gay like that ^^

I am excited about crafting being wrapped up in the game. I am ready to go back to being a Droid Engineer. I enjoyed making droids, it was alot fun knowing, when you were walking around a city and you saw a player with a droid following him/her, you kinda said to yourself, "Hey self, that might be one of the droids I made for that person." Its a rewarding feeling.

wow...haven't checked in on the emu in a long time, things are progressing amazingly. Been broke for a while, but as soon as I've got some spare dough, I'll chip in again...it's crazy that you guys do this all for essentially free.

Anyway, regarding the height mapping issue...I know you requested educated ideas, and this one isn't very much so, but just a thought that popped into my head when reading about it. I know of some games that use a fractal to generate terrain (the Tribes family of FPS's, for example). I assume that SW:G doesn't do this, but to go along those lines, would it be possible to find an equation that describes the terrain sufficiently instead of a huge database of x,y,z coordinates? Probably not, but just figured I'd throw it out there.

keep up the great work devs...I can't wait to play Pre-CU!

There is something that I had always wondered about and I know that you are in the development stage of this process, and this would be the time to consider this I think. Rangers used to be able to place tents of varying sizes and shapes, and those tents would adjust the heightmap and level the ground no matter where it was placed. Could this general idea be applied to the City Halls of cities? That way there is no real concern about terrain for city construction, because every city will get a nice flat surface to build on. The "Flattened" land could also be the diameter of the limits of the city size, and grow as the city size increases.

This is a bit off-topic....but do you mean the entire city radius flat?

Personally I liked having to go out and find a decent spot for a large city. But I would like the land immediately around each building to build up flat like a camp, just not the entire city radius.

This should probably be discussed in the Future Server Ideas forum :)

well done guys! brings back some good memories....even just hearing the sounds and the clicks reminds me of the joy I got from crafting...

the crafting system is what really set SWG apart from the other games out there...thank you for doing it justice!

Keep up the good work!

excellent, however i did notice one thing and i'm not sure if it's there and just hasn't been implemented yet, when you gain ranks in a artisan class you don't neccicarily get the schematics transfered to your data pad... not sure if it just hasn't been handled yet or what?
