View Full Version : SWGEmu Goes Open Source!

The Starwars Galaxies Pre-Combat Upgrade Server Emulator has gone open source! The project hopes to attract fresh new programmers with a drive to contribute. This will mean the project will accelerate at a much faster pace than before and soon, everyone will be able to enjoy the game SOE destroyed.

If you are new to SWGEmu, please read the FAQ here (http://swgemu.com/forums/faq.php).

What does open source mean for Users?
If you are not gifted with the ability to write code in C++, fear not. You can still help the project by logging onto the Test Center (TC) whenever we put up a new test build and testing out new features. High volumes of players are important when new builds are tested out because of the connection limit imposed on all public builds of engine3 up until the v1.0 release.

What does open source mean for programmers?
The SWGEmu development team has written an ample amount of documentation on the public wiki to get new programmers up to date. Articles range from the Environment Setup to the SWG network protocol. The documentation is always a work in progress and it will continue to improve as the project progresses.

What is not included in the open source release?
Engine3 is not included. Engine3 is what powers Core3, the server, and handles all the disgusting low-level operations you would not want to touch anyway.

Is there a connection limit on public builds of engine3?
Yes. We have set the connection limit to 5 on all engine3 builds until the v1.0 release. To test higher volumes of players, we will actively be looking for stable patches submitted by the community and add them to the public test center for high volumes of players to test. See the "Limitations" page in the public wiki linked below.

Well, happy contributing! The #opendev channel on our irc is dedicated to talk about the Core3 source. Have fun, and we look forward to your contributions.

We have also opened up a new Open Source Discussion forum that you should see about now. This forum is dedicated to discussing the source for those that can't get on IRC at active times.

http://public.swgemu.com -SWGEmu Open Source development site. Wiki, SVN, Bug Tracking, and code submissions.

Developers who contribute alot of their time and code will be welcomed onto the team and given the ability to commit code directly to the svn themselves.
(After passing certain quality/control tests from our current team of course)

We are currently accepting resumes from prospective developers who wish to join the team right away. Please forum PM them to Me, Oru, TheAnswer, Ramsey and Seaseme.

Also in order to attract more developers, please Digg our story!

eclipse for c++ development.. eww.. it isn't even my first choice (on the lastest kernel) for java development outside sun1.6.. stupid gcj..

anyways.. I have some free time over the next couple weeks.. I'll hopefully get a chance to go over the source, look into optimizing and/or the "to-do" list.

I sure hope some of the folks from the community are able to make some contributions to the source and help move things along. Congrats on the move to quasi-open-source!

In the end it doesn't matter. Emu is an emu. We much rather have a team that knows their own code updating it for us, than some other team still trying to figure out how to use it and give us half-assed updates, and possible f**k ups.

Man you guys were smart to force this thing to be compiled by the user themselves. Still a pain in the butt though, need all these emulated layers just to compile and run the damn thing just to see what needs to be look at in a physical point of view lol.. oh well it's well worth it.

We will eventually offer binaries on stable releases. But until 1.0, its just the source with the connection limit.

Will there be a beta stage or will you go right into 1.0 release?

I wouldn't turn it over to a college :D But, they can write code and submit it to the DEV's for review.

Yes, it's nonprofit. College students are just as welcome to help with coding as anyone else. As for it being some sort of an official project for credit, that would be up to their teacher(s).

There's really only 1 other project left, and they're pretty far along. Code isn't plug and play, you know.

Also, it would be obvious by looking at later who's it was, so who really gives a ****.

Good idea to let the community participate. I rly hope it works out well this time.

As so far there was little to see - what is with space? Will the open source server be space enabled or will it be pre JTL?

To be honest.. i dont think people would mind if the Emu released with only ground content and then JTL added in later.. yea i agree it would be nice. but most people are looking for the original content of the game.. if JTL was mainly what they were focusing on they could still play SWG because its still the same in space now as it was in pre-cu.. hasnt changed much in that aspect, little if none at all.. but i think it will be released with JTL though.:lightsaber::emperor:

Wtf are you talking about, get your facts straight

And what you mean by that is they gave it to us, took it away, and rehashed it as something "new"

No, Core 1 open source was a train wreck, this system is going to actually work, and it already is working

Ramsey

Core1 was open source, and it was a disaster. We scrapped it and rewrote a lot of the components for core3.
