SWGEmu Goes Open Source!
The Starwars Galaxies Pre-Combat Upgrade Server Emulator has gone open source! The project hopes to attract fresh new programmers with a drive to contribute. This will mean the project will accelerate at a much faster pace than before and soon, everyone will be able to enjoy the game SOE destroyed.
If you are new to SWGEmu, please read the FAQ here. What does open source mean for Users? If you are not gifted with the ability to write code in C++, fear not. You can still help the project by logging onto the Test Center (TC) whenever we put up a new test build and testing out new features. High volumes of players are important when new builds are tested out because of the connection limit imposed on all public builds of engine3 up until the v1.0 release. What does open source mean for programmers? The SWGEmu development team has written an ample amount of documentation on the public wiki to get new programmers up to date. Articles range from the Environment Setup to the SWG network protocol. The documentation is always a work in progress and it will continue to improve as the project progresses. What is not included in the open source release? Engine3 is not included. Engine3 is what powers Core3, the server, and handles all the disgusting low-level operations you would not want to touch anyway. Is there a connection limit on public builds of engine3? Yes. We have set the connection limit to 5 on all engine3 builds until the v1.0 release. To test higher volumes of players, we will actively be looking for stable patches submitted by the community and add them to the public test center for high volumes of players to test. See the "Limitations" page in the public wiki linked below. Well, happy contributing! The #opendev channel on our irc is dedicated to talk about the Core3 source. Have fun, and we look forward to your contributions. We have also opened up a new Open Source Discussion forum that you should see about now. This forum is dedicated to discussing the source for those that can't get on IRC at active times. http://public.swgemu.com -SWGEmu Open Source development site.
