i was under the impression that clustering was a nifty option to use several servers instead of one to lighten the load, but i don't think it's mandatory. not sure though =p but part of what i saw when i googled it that if you're using clustering and you're running 2/3 servers if one server fails/crashes, then the other servers automatically pick up the slack
