View Full Version : The Christmas Announcement

The SWGEmu Team would like to announce two major things
as our Christmas present to the awesome community here.

Playable Test Center
Official Server Plans

Playable Test Center

In order to thoroughly test out all aspects of the game, we feel that we are finally at a point in development where we can announce our intentions for a “playable” test center.

What is going to happen to the current TC (Nova (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Nova-class_battle_cruiser))?

The current Test Center (TC:Nova) will run much like it does now. Blue Frogs will still be present to give items and train professions that are in need of immediate testing. New features will be added straight from the SVN to TC:Nova. This saves you the time of having to grind your profession and allows you to test new content immediately. Testers who want to test out new features and play around in a less serious atmosphere will still want to play on TC:Nova. On occasion, TC:Nova may experience database wipes in order to ensure testing and stability.

What is going to be on the new TC (Sun Crusher (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Sun_Crusher))?

The new "playable" Test Center (TC:SC) will be a separate and new server. TC:SC will only be updated with new features once we are fairly certain they are 100% stable and tested on TC:Nova. TC:SC will have no blue frogs or @GM commands for players. You are meant to grind your profession, much as you will in the final release of the game. This helps ensure that there will be fewer bugs on TC:SC, and that all levels of game play are tested equally. Since testers will no doubt spend a lot of time leveling their characters on TC:SC, we will make every effort to ensure that we do not wipe the database, unless it is absolutely needed. Testers who want a feel of what the final game will be like, and are looking for something to simply “play” will want to play on TC:SC.

When can we expect these changes to go live?

As long as we continue to receive enough community support and donations to support two servers, while still saving enough for future goals, you should see the server go live sometime in Q1 2009. In order to ensure the best game play possible, we still have a few features that we would like to finish up before starting the playable server. These features, such as crafting and player housing, are in their finishing stages and should be ready and stable in the coming months.

Official Server Plans

We have been bombarded with this question as long as the project has existed. "Is SWGEmu going to host an official server?" We have always deflected this question with non-committal responses. Today we make the official announcement that SWGEmu WILL be hosting a server called "Sun Crusher (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Sun_Crusher)". Sun Crusher will start out as the "Playable Test Center" and when the official release is ready, then it will be wiped and become the SWGEmu LIVE Server.

After long discussions and debates, we want to make sure that the community can count on SWGEmu to be a pillar in the SWG Emulation scene. Does this mean that SWGEmu wants to force out or hurt the communities? Absolutely not! In fact, we will be setting up numerical standards for servers to become "Official" sponsored servers. Standards would include things such as user base, server hardware, server bandwidth and connection, so we can ensure the entire user base a central place to come and see reliable servers with their specialties. Each server will have their own play style and new features, and keeping information about them in a central location will benefit everyone's population.

Knowing what inquiries will abound from this post, an ambiguous statement will be the answer for the inevitable onslaught of the question "Will SWGEmu implement X new feature, or balance X something". The answer to this is maybe. Our #1 commitment is releasing a fully functional, identical SWG (with bug fixes) emulator. This "vanilla" release (SVN) will be maintained by SWGEmu for the foreseeable future. That said, the majority, if not all, of the SWGEmu developers are excited to taking Sun Crusher and fulfilling the potential that SOE never got around to doing.

More details will come forth in the coming weeks/months about this, but this is our Christmas present to everyone who has been asking and hoping for this. Please continue to enjoy the existing test center, and we look forward to getting the Sun Crusher community going in the very near future. We love you and thank you for your support.

Happy Holidays,
Team SWGEmu
Thanks to bobius and Kyle for the two sections

That is an amazing announcment! And I love the names of the servers. Nova and Sun Crusher. Definitely interesting names.

I feel as if this was a great gift that I could receive. And it works well because I just got a new motherboard, cpu, and graphics card combo (AMD and nVidia) and I'm looking forward to getting online with my new setup to rock it to it's fullest potential!

Thank you again! And I want to wish you all, the developer and moderator teams, a very Merry Christmas. I hope you all have a wonderful and safe Christmas!

I think there will be more people logging onto suncrusher in its first hours of being live than people logging onto SWG in the entire last year lol. Shotgun taking a screenshot of a crazily busy tatooine full of brand new characters and just posting it somewhere on SOE SWG forums saying....remember this LOL

I'm not really sure whats to get excited about.

1 heavily populated server with massive lag for any non US players and 10's of sparesely populated servers, that will die off rather quickly.

Monopolies are never a good idea for the consumer (end-user/us) they are always great for the people running them.
SWGEMU now have a very captive audience and will draw any new players instantly. They have effectively killed off any of the other servers, some of which are better able to host a server.
Most of you wont care because you've been blowing sunshine up SWGEMU's arse for so long, but a lot of people have put a great deal of effort into preparing a dedicated server and that work has been nulified by this announcement.

The future doesnt seem so bright.

By viewing the numerous debates addressing this issue over at the Euro Chimaera forums, you may be able to gain a greater perspective of how we are making it fair for all servers and how Sun Crusher will never hold a monopoly of players. I'm not willing to repeat myself here with what I have said there - I've spent enough time on it as it is. However if you read our responses there closely you will see that we have no intention of allowing what you have said ever occur.

Ahhh...now THIS is the kind of christmas present a guy like me can get giddy about! ;)

Thank you so very much for this announcement. You have shared with us your plans for SWGEmu, now I can make plans as well. You can count on me supporting SWGEmu monthly starting in January (my wallet is a little thin right now). Now is the time to make the final sprint to the finish line.

Wow. This is great news for fans of the emu :)

If the new server is coming 1st qtr 2009, does this mean that a full working version of the emu is going to be available by then also?

So Max, you have stated that you will play on EuroChim, but as you know words are cheap.

Also the method SWGEMU propose to implement to get around the monopoly is for the people running the monopoly to authorise official servers.

Independent servers have to go through some sort of screening process and the people running the monopoly (SWGEMU) are the same people to grant that qualification?

It still sounds terribly unfair to me.

Push come to shove, when someone hears about an Pre-CU emulator and they have a choice between:

SunCrusher
Euro-Chim
TrueGalaxies
X server
Y server
Z server

Where do you think 99.9% of people are going to go?

And if the other .1% are who decide SC is not for them, they're directed to a choice of other APPROVED SWGEMU servers.

Dress it up however you like but its still a monopolistic strategy.

The only way to get around this problem is not to host a server at all. If the motives of the SWGEMU team are as honourable as everyone says, then theres nothing to be lost.
However, if there is some underlying strategy going on here, then SWGEMU will continue on this path.

A monopoly implies there is only one option. In this case there is not. There are infinite.

If a server is large enough to be considered "major", they will be featured on our website and through our community. Everyone else has the option of posting in Server Listings forum and adding their server to the open list on our new website upon launch. Sun Crusher gets no special treatment - it doesn't even get a big orange badge saying "PICK ME! ITS OFFICIAL" on it. Its on the list just like everyone else.

To put it plainly, we don't have the ability to support everyone who wants to play. We can't house, neither technically nor practically, 20 000 people on Sun Crusher. Camping the Acklay was hard enough on Live, its simply silly to have twice or three times as many people playing. People are going to be FORCED to play on other servers.

If the other servers are going to provide a service which is as good as it looks it will be, I think they'll be struggling to hold everyone, not struggling for players.

Hold on... Am I reading this correctly? SWG Emu will be completed in Q1 2009?
No. Sun Crusher is a test centre which has no Blue Frogs, Instant-trainers, and all of the other quick-start features. It will be a test centre for all those who want to "play" properly, with XP and grinding and proper advancement and economics. By no means will it be completed. It's just a more stable and "playable" version of the TC open to the public.

Yes. Sun Crusher will upon launch become a fully functional Play Server just like True Galaxies or Euro Chimaera, but hosted by the SWGEmu team.

The future doesnt seem so bright.

i disagree with you.

atleast i myself, will be creating and playing characters on multiple servers at start. then decide after while which suits best for my needs / likings.

every one will be bit different in one way or other, be it location, community or certain aspects of the game/future plans. i'm sure there is plenty of players atleast for the major servers out there.

wouldn't it be better and best for all of us if the different communities could work together with EMU team instead of taking it like competition? we're all in this cause we want pre-cu back.

We will host one server. The type still hasn't be decided yet. The different communities will all offer their own flavors, so everyone will find a server that is to their liking. That is the beauty of open source.

just like on soe's swg when there was many servers to chose from, there is multiple servers to chose from with the emu. those servers like true galaxies and the such i am sure have built tight bonds and they will not want to go to another server because they enjoy the atmosphere there. just because the emu team is going to have thier own server, does not mean every one will flock to the emu team's server. I for one will see which one is more to my liking and depending on many factors will chose a server, not necessarily this one.

Push come to shove, when someone hears about an Pre-CU emulator and they have a choice between:

SunCrusher
Euro-Chim
TrueGalaxies
X server
Y server
Z server

Where do you think 99.9% of people are going to go?

Sounds to me like you dont want a highly populated server... Very strange...

Question for any of the devs or anyone working on the emulator, is there a rough estimate you guys expect for the amount of people who will be playing SunCrusher?

As its going in development like now, is there a figure in the heads of everyone working too that they expect the server to reach?

So Max, you have stated that you will play on EuroChim, but as you know words are cheap.

Also the method SWGEMU propose to implement to get around the monopoly is for the people running the monopoly to authorise official servers.

Independent servers have to go through some sort of screening process and the people running the monopoly (SWGEMU) are the same people to grant that qualification?

It still sounds terribly unfair to me.

Push come to shove, when someone hears about an Pre-CU emulator and they have a choice between:

Euro-Chim

Where do you think 99.9% of people are going to go?

And if the other .1% are who decide SC is not for them, they're directed to a choice of other APPROVED SWGEMU servers.

Dress it up however you like but its still a monopolistic strategy.

The only way to get around this problem is not to host a server at all. If the motives of the SWGEMU team are as honourable as everyone says, then theres nothing to be lost.
However, if there is some underlying strategy going on here, then SWGEMU will continue on this path.

Look at it this way. SWGEMU developed the code, they have every right to decide how to use it. They are just giving this community what they asked for...a hosted server of their own. I am from another server community and I am fine with it. If you've been paying attention the past few months you knew swgemu was going to host a server. How could they not?

Relax and let things play out. I will be enjoying playing Sun Crusher and Nova in the meantime and help in any way I can.

The engine is not open source, all of the SWG side of things will always be available to the public, however, servers will have to obtain unrestricted binaries to not have the current public limitations. The difference is that the unrestricted binaries will come with more hands on support than the public binaries and have none of the current limitations. More details on that as launch becomes closer.

However, if there is some underlying strategy going on here, then SWGEMU will continue on this path. There have been polls done. 99.9% of people have been begging SWGEmu to host an official server for years. i personally have an easier time trusting my money to a time-tested, well organized, knowledgeable team here than anywhere else.

Regardless, TG and EuroChim have huge communities already(TG has 28,000 forum registrants, EC has 46,000), if their communities are as strong as they boast, they should have no problem maintaining a preCU-ish population.

what does SWGEmu have to benefit from a monopoly of players anyway? Even if they attract the majority of players simply because of their reliability and thoroughness (which i'd bet on), its not like they're cheating anybody out of anything. No money is involved, or ever will be (aside from donations to keep the wheels turning). Players will play wherever they feel the best community and reliable staff. Nobody can fault the SWGEmu team for developing a supportive community and amazing staff.

this is a day of great sadness for the emu communities around the world.

If these means that we will not be able to build a private server to mess around with, then I agree. That is the part I was looking forward to. I really wanted to have my own server to explore and play around with. I could care less about opening my own server up to the public. I have done the same thing with WoW servers in the past.

Do not get me wrong, having a public server is a great thing and should be loads of fun for all. I plan on joining one for my normal play.

As I understand it, anyone will be able to create a private server... even if they do not meet any of the requirements the Emu team implements. Those requirements however must be met in order to become a certified* server.

If you want to compile the Source and run it, you can. It's Open Source and there's absolutely nothing to stop you from doing so. If you want to generate a large population for your server, one of the ways to do so would be to meet the requirements that will be set, and register* the server w/ the Emu project.

* Register and Certified would be my terms... just to clarify the jist of it. I don't know what the complete process will be, not sure the devs do yet either.

Independent servers have to go through some sort of screening process and the people running the monopoly (SWGEMU) are the same people to grant that qualification?Well, they did write the thing, after all. It's theirs, not yours, not ours. Show some appreciation that the developers decided to pursue the project at all.

There is nothing at all unfair in the developers using the system they have developed from the ground up in whatever manner they see fit. You people who feel entitled to other people's work just kill me.

A true benchmark can't be ran to determine server requirements until the product is ready for release. There are still many systems that haven't been designed, so it is still too early to make any accurate judgements on what will be required to host an SWGEmu server. In the end, it will depend on how large of a population you are aiming to support.

its there code they can do whatever they want with it, including hosting their own server, which would probably be better in quality then a lot of other people's servers which will eventually turn into "gee i wanna play god today and since i have a private server no one can stop me" kinda games.

You all can "taste" this announcement?

I tast another donor round push, some inter-emu bickering, and about three more years of inadequate slacker responses - w/o finished product.

Sure, new TC is like SWG-Lite - but it is nowhere near complete. Factor in the pace of events - and Santa is bringing your ass coal again this XMas.

Bah humbug

I don't know what to say to this...

I like cake?!!?

It makes so much more sense. :)

I don't understand. This thread was started a year ago? So the devs had hoped that SC would go live in Q1 2009? Was there just a typo? is this announcement an indication of SC to be up and running Q1 2010, sooner or open to speculation?

THIS IS A YEAR OLD.

They thought they'd be done w all this a year ago, thereabouts.

Get ready for more donor drives as we wait for the Never Ending Story to conclude.

You guys need to seriously finish this already. First quarter of 2009?

I'll check back in 2012... maybe we'll still be using desktops by the time this game is finished...

I like pie to. :)

I would try to explain to you how amazing is what these people are trying to create and how huge this project really is. If they don't commit a single part of the code ever again it still wouldn't diminish what they have accomplished. They have earned their place in the gaming history by recreating in their on free time something people said and still say couldn't be done.

I would also ask you to respect other peoples lives, they have school, work, wife's and kids and yet they find time to do all this without expecting anything in return.

But i would be wasting my time, wouldn't I?

Vlada, blow the devs much?

Your posts in support of the Grand Father Time paced develeopment here earn you extra XP or Holocron unlocks? I mean, some of the people waiting here have probably spent a tenth of their life waiting, at least, waiting for this EMU to roll. I mean - Lucas has two other games pending since SOE folded and punted post-CU.

If it goes on and on and on - it'll wind up like Ultima Online, some sparse shards with a 300 player at keys pop. During peak!

These guys should pull their sh!t together and bang out the Object Restructure or w/e Cap and Trade, Stimulus title they have given the newest "holding pattern".

If I'm not speaking for your views - then I am certainly vocalizing on behalf of a minority - a submissive minority, who are fed up with waiting for promised goods yet to be delivered.

p.s. I mushroom slapped your cake, enjoy.

old post was necro'd from last year. old news.

Words
they owe you nothing. go away if it bothers you that much. you don't seem to get it yet.

They're doing this on their own time, for free, because they want to.

If they never commit another line of code ever, they will still not owe you nor anyone else anything at all ever.

If you're so bitter, and feel you're entitled to anything, go whine to sony and play their game.

Also, this thread is so ancient, it ought to be locked already.

edit: the only release date they're locked into for anything is exactly when they feel like its ready and when they want to do anything more with it.

We dont want to hear people whining about how long it is taking, if it is taking too long, make your own emu or stfu.

Ok Im not supporting leoten whats so ever, but I have to say this. He isn't whining or moaning he is just stating facts. You guys r all being super supportive and i think that is really cool, but you got to remember this is the real world. People get fed up, and even you precious FanBoys will throw in the towel, so all I am saying is Leoten speaks some truths. They need to get done soon or all this hard work will be for nothing. Especially with that new really cool star wars game coming out "The Old Republic".

As miffed as I was when SunCrusher never came around I have to say anyone complaining about how long this game is taking is completely ignorant as to how difficult coding is. A game of this magnitude, especially an MMO takes years for entire companies to produce.

The original SWG took SOE's development team, at least three years to complete, that is to say from the date the game was announced on march 16th, 2000 until release. It may have taken longer. Now I don't know how many developers are working on the emu but I promise you there was a hell of a lot more people on the original game.

So, you know, shut up? This is the first time I've checked SWGEMU in 7 months and I probably wont check again until next summer. Find yourself something to do in the mean time those of us who loved the magic of SWGEMU will be here when its done no matter how long it takes, especially since TOR is striving for a different style of play then SWG.

TL;DR: Coding is ****ing hard, shut the hell up.

Wow. Where are you from man? You can go back where you came from, because this community does not need your negativism.

FYI, if you'd been participating in the development of this project, you would know that the developers have been making great progress on pusuing this GOAL - and it WAS a goal, not a cast in concrete deadline they had to meet. The EMU code has gone through a tremendous amount of work over the last six months with the Object Restructure and the change to a completely new Database scheme, which will result in a better product over all - not for the week hearted or feable minded.

And as of late, they have also implemented a TON of new content onto the Nova Test Server. If you have not logged on and tried it, then you should. This kind of a program does not appear from nowhere using fairy dust. It takes a ton of cooperation and work.

Try to ease up, OK? You'll get to play soon enough.

I think everyone should be reminded of the fact that it took over 5 years to develop the original swg, pre-update 1, with a fully employed development team that had previously created EQ.. and a couple more to make updates/fixes/patches and what ever else.

So the next person to "mention" or "bring up" or "speak the truth" about how long it's taking our development team (who have their own jobs and lives to take time out of for volunteering to develop this Emu) needs to be hung by their toes overnight outside and naked.

The next person to go so far as "complaining" or "whining" about the time line gets to deal with skunks and yellow jackets as well.

Nothing to see here, Move along.
