View Full Version : SWGemu Q&A 4/4/07

This is NOT the weekly update.
This is a Q/A session like we promised, its separate from weekly updates.

Q) How the spawns coming, will be they be static? or completely new spawns
A) There are both :)-- There's been a group of guys patrolling the NGE logging every static NPC they see. We have 2500 + of them, and a few others have finished with the creature database, and NPCs are on the verge of being finished. I will finish it this week now that I have some time.

Q) What will we not be able to customize using LUA?
A) we plan to make nearly everything customizable, will see what we gonna have time for in the end.

Q) What % would you say JTL is complete?
A) 90%

Q) Will there be more animation testing in the next round of testing?
A) Yes but it wont be the main focus.

Q) How much money do you guys need to keep the server alive?
A) $299 for a single server. $299 * x for clustering. X being the number of servers (3-7).

Q) Do you feel like you will be able to add in professions soon?
A) Its a bit further on the to do list, but in the near future yes.

Q) How is experience implemented? with mobs?
A) Its there. We just wont award xp for mobs on the upcomming TC until Professions are in.

Q) You said resources were in the ground.. what percent of crafting is done along with that?
A) Most of the protocol behind crafting is done. Just the data related items are still in infancy.

Q) is it possible too add your own custom items too the database?
A) Yes.

Q) What are some ways that we, the community, can assist the development/database team other than testing?
A) The public wiki is still in development. Watch for it ;)

Q) What would you say is the next order of "testing" for the TestCenter, anything particular that we should be "preparing" for?
A) Stress testing with npcs mostly.

Q) What are some ways that we, the community, can assist the development/database team other than testing?

A) Good question. We've been working on putting up an swgemu wiki (http://www.swgemu.com/wiki) that will allow you to post all pre-cu information you can to help speed up the process. It's not complete yet, or ready for a ton of entries. It should be ready within a few days though. The other thing that we are REALLY in need of is base item stats. With out actual pre-cu information on items, we will have to guess. Which means things won't be exactly right. These are all things that the wiki will be used for.

Q) When do you guys think you will add groups to the TC?
A) Its on the top 10 SWG related features to do for Core3.

Q) To go along with Erec's question, how about NPCS?
A) They will be in the next TC. Watch for it ;)

Q) Idk if this is out there already, but are all planets finished, and how is shuttles and starships comming along?
A) Do you mean spawns? Theres a good amount done. I think 6-7000+.

Q) How much more do you have to do on combat before the fine tuning is started like equations and so fourth?
A) Equasions are more fine tuned things. They will be in scripts most likely, but they still need to be collected.

Q) Is there any word on placing structures?
A) Research was done and completed last month by Ultyma.

Q) Do you need things like specific weapon information or is the database team already covering that thoroughly?
A) That will be on the coming wiki.

Q) New Content?
A) New models and skins? Not supported. New missions, quests, npcs etc yes.

Q) Can we expect some fun "events" to go along with the tests on TestCenter?
A) Thats the new direction our TC will be taking. Themed events for each stres test.

Q) How the spawns coming, will be they be static? or completely new spawns
A) Spawns for npcs, new or old, may be defined by the server admin. The DB team will strive to compelte the spawn db with official coordinates.

Q) are groups going to be in a upcoming patch? Will travel?
A) Groups are on the top 10 SWG related features on the to do list for myself. Travel is also on top 10

Q) What is on the top 10 list?
A) This top 10 list should ideally be completed in no more than 1.5 weeks, though it could take longer due to life. These are SWG related functions and do NOT include internal improvements to the server such as clustering & stability fixes.

W00t, awesome news. There has been a lot I didn't know was finished or near finished. Although many things said in this q/a are planned for the "near" future, I'm not gonna hype myself up, just help out with TC testing, as I know very little about Pre-Cu stats.

Yes it is considering they have never given percentages and said in the past they wouldn't. For a much tougher question would have been a % guess at the overall project.

Thank you to both question asker and answerer for the info. Good to know a little more than we did before.

This made me lol :)

Yeah thats dope, i think the SWGEMU devs will be so tired of the game by the time it comes out they will probably not even wanna play it, what they're doing is probably worse than any holo grind could ever be...

Wow, It is great to hear this stuff!
Very impressive, as usual, guys!

There's been a group of guys patrolling the NGE logging every static NPC they see. We have 2500 + of them, and a few others have finished with the creature database, and NPCs are on the verge of being finished. I will finish it this week now that I have some time.

Hey, I just wanted to chime in on this...
I know that the Mos Eisley Cantina (As one example) was revamped as far as NPC's and such... rather disappointingly (Another anti-improvement on their part).
I think it happened first during the CU, but it may have been before... can't remember...
Anyway, that is one place that I know the NPC's were messed around with and basically they took a lot of them out and arranged them differently.

It always bothered me, because heading into Mos Eisley Cantina was one of the first things I did in SWG at Launch and I was so blown away about being in that place as such a huge Star Wars fan, hehe.

So, I would suggest getting some Star Wars fans on the team to figure out exactly what NPC's should go where in there to make it better resemble the movie scene (As it was in the original SWG).
I think the furniture may have even been moved around, but I'm not quite positive on that one.

Eek... that took me too many words to say that... basically... SOE F'd up the NPC's in Mos Eisely Cantina and you should come up with some better placements than what they have there now (NGE).

;)

Thanks for everything!

They could of done so much more with NPC's than having random generic titles nobody uses and having no purpose except to fill up cities.

Great news all around.

I compiled a three ring binder with every single weapon, the resources needed, in what quantity, with the most desired resource quality, in 2004 while i was a Master Weaponsmith. I'll definitely put my info in the wiki whenever it's up and running if need be.

Really cool Q&A. The only thing better than this is T&A.

You forgot to answer one crucial question..

What % would you say the emu is complete in terms of PvP combat? 95% of the players in here only want the land based Pre-CU game back mainly for the purposes of PvP. Master the PvP land game and keep crafting, JTL and all other things on the back burner and watch how thousands flood in these forums and play core3 everyday ;)

While i am looking Verrrry forward to the Emu going live, To say to put things on the back burner is not practical. All are intrical parts to the Swg Pre-cu experience Pvp is drastically effected without crafting of both weapons , armor as well as meds. The Emu would be better served if we just left the Developers to decide what is necessary and in the order they feel it is necessary. We each have our aspects of the game we are looking forward to and as such just have to be patient it will happen. Better to take longer and have it right then have it done fast and error filled.

LOL. I would guess that over half of the community is into PVP primarily. But if "95% of the players in here" are interested mainly in the purpose of PVP, most of the non PVP community is sitting on the sidelines waiting for something else to do. And I'm certain that the percentage of players who don't participate in PVP as our primary gaming concern, is more like 25-50% of the overall community. I'd be surprised if the percentage of players who rarely or never particpated in PVP is less than 20% of the Pre-CU community.

Theres nothing to do server side really. We assign each "terrain file" an ID. If you want to spawn an npc there just have to set the planet id to that terrain file.

If people want to recreate the salvageable planets then they'll be able to do that through scripting and the db. We as SWGEmu devs don't handle those extra planets any different from normal ones.

I think you're mistaken, I know alot of people like PvP, and I'm not saying people don't want it, however I know many people who are looking forward to PvE content and crafting more than PvP. I personally am waiting for JTL, and half my guild is waiting for crafting to be implemented. If all we wanted was PvP we'd be playing as much as we could already, while we may not have professions or groups we can kill each other, this does get old without anything to support it. My guess would be that somewhere between 25 and 40 percent of the community is waiting to move past PvP and into the realm of real gameplay.

I know I by no means side with the majority, but if PvP was my purpose I'd just play Battlefront 2, Battlefield 2, and Halo. My purpose however is to hang out with my friends while I play a game in a large static universe, to work with people I know and to RP in an immersive world within the greatest fictional universe I've ever had the pleasure of entering.

yes you could do that currently if you wanted to. All you have to do is rename the Tenaabs terrain files to what Tatooines are. Then it would think the terrain for tenaab is tats terrain and Tattooine would become Tenaab. At least thats how I think it works. Also you can do that currently with SWGEMU or even with the NGE.

You dont even have to do that. taanab has its own terrain file, so you just have to change your character planet id to spawn there. We will release a list of every planet/terrain file and their corresponding ids.

Its great to see the start of these Q&A sessions. Things like this are what will bring community together (both active members and the many lurkers that are around) and attract more people to this project

Also, in my opinion it is important for the community to not press the developers for too much information as they do need to focus on the project at hand. We do not want this to turn this into a "give them (the community) an inch and they take a mile" situation which I am sure would upset the whole SWGEmu team.

All i know is that i installed everything today, got everything working only to hear that oh-so-familiar loading swg music and it almost brought tears to my eyes. I really don't give a damn how long it takes to be honest. I will wait eons if it means i can play the game i once loved again. If i see people complain because the legends behind this project are 'taking their time' getting everything up and running, then i shall verbally beat them down.

Up til this morning i really thought the EMU was a pipe-dream. I've never enjoyed being so wrong in my life.

I'd like to, for feed back and further discussion purposes, to just add my own questions, remarks and comments. PLEASE do not take this as criticism.
Also, I would just like to say that having read this; it put quite the smile on my face, especially when I think back to how excited we all were when we first got to log in to an empty wasteland lol.

For the sense of immersion in the Swg world, seeing assorted "people" standing or walking around was always a subtle but of niceness. But there were areas where multi-spawns would often create lag because of load issues
(For example, Im sure many of you remember the Warren on dantooine super spawning critters/npcs). Can anything be done to reduce that?

Q) What % would you say JTL is complete?
A) 90%

To me, this is nothing but fantastic news. I'm currently mmorpg'less because nothing offered what JTL did lol.

Q) How much money do you guys need to keep the server alive?
A) $299 for a single server. $299 * x for clustering. X being the number of servers (3-7).

Lol, if everyone in the community contributed $5 you could probably purchase a seperate server for every planet.

Q) How is experience implemented? with mobs?
A) Its there. We just wont award xp for mobs on the upcomming TC until Professions are in.

In the pre-cu system was the ever popular solo-grouping, while it was handy for those days I was feeling anti-social, I admit that CU's grouping setup (ie: spin groups etc) certainly added to alot of peoples sense of community.
Can there be a balance between the Xp awards for actual groups and solo-groupers from a technical standpoint?

Q) You said resources were in the ground.. what percent of crafting is done along with that?
A) Most of the protocol behind crafting is done. Just the data related items are still in infancy.

Will this be the same resource system as seen post-Jtl in SWG or prior? In regards to resource "stat caps".

Q) What are some ways that we, the community, can assist the development/database team other than testing?
A) The public wiki is still in development. Watch for it ;)

While I generally avoid wiki, I believe I will make an exception.

Q) What would you say is the next order of "testing" for the TestCenter, anything particular that we should be "preparing" for?
A) Stress testing with npcs mostly.

*grabs a baseball bat, chainsaw and lead pipe* Where do I sign up heheh.

Tricky prospect, SOE pulled or hid most of their old archives from user posts on their forums that dealt with the item lists. Chances are, searching around online for old screenies, posts and etc in different websites may yield results.
*makes note on his sticky pad*

Q) Idk if this is out there already, but are all planets finished, and how is shuttles and starships comming along?
A) Do you mean spawns? Theres a good amount done. I think 6-7000+.

One of the issues SOE addressed was the spawn timer for the Corvette mission, as a fairly active pilot I used to help stand watches for the vette in order to help out casual pilots(players) scramble to finish the mission. Can something be done to reduce the wait time to 30-45 minutes as opposed to an hour? I don't imagine it being a major issue to most of us regulars but is it something we ought to consider?

Q) Is there any word on placing structures?
A) Research was done and completed last month by Ultyma.

Again, that warm and fuzzy feeling has enveloped me.

Q) New Content?
A) New models and skins? Not supported. New missions, quests, npcs etc yes.

My only request is nothing on the same stupidity scale as Legacy.

Q) Can we expect some fun "events" to go along with the tests on TestCenter?
A) Thats the new direction our TC will be taking. Themed events for each stres test.

welcome to the TC First Ever N00b Melon eating Competition! How many can you eat before your Food/Drink meter explodes in self defense!

Welcome to the First Ever TC Helper Droid Racing Competition!

etc (sorry, couldnt resist)

My silly commentary out of the way, along with a few questions I had, I would like to offer my thanks to the Team for the update (despite their original admonishment they'd release `em when they felt like it lol).

Now if you'll excuse me, I've got about a month of updates, posts and info around here to catch up on, along with finding out whats new in the Faq if anything.

dont know if this is what you are talking about when you say a completely different type of spawn but this is what comes to mind here

NPCs that are predators set to patrol locations that will move towards what it is given as “lunch target” within a given range from the path (kind of like a ranger tracks the NPC would move after its “lunch targets”). To handle the depletion of the NPCs through EvE combat and EvP combat have a respawn of buggers every 10 min (less what was not killed).

Came close or just way off?

*nm now I understand when you say spawns... cant delete this myself can somone do it for me?*
