Hi all,

As you know the server was wiped and patched with our new monster code submission. As 500 of you charged headlong into the Galaxy to carve out your path, you exposed new and unforeseen bugs. This is a good thing!

All day, the server was going up and down, as the developers working on stability discovered the problems, and rectified them.

The server deadlocked (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deadlock) about an hour ago, and will likely remain in this state for the next few hours. Please be patient as we move through the debugging on the current patch.

Please also look HERE (http://www.swgemu.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29808), to familiarize yourselves with how Server Status affects TC:Nova.

THANK YOU, to all of you who showed up for this momentous day! Tomorrow and the next week/month will likely be equally exciting. I know for myself, it is the closest I've felt to launchday in 2003 yet =)

It was laggy as hell, I only played for 20 minutes, and I had a blast.

keep up the great work testing. dont get tired of crashes/deadlocks as they are all one step closer towards a stable server.

Got on for about 5 hours eeeeeeaaaaarrrrly this morning, and it was amazing. I'm willing to tough out the next few hours, it'll make the next 12 hours I play even better!

Agreed with all posts above. Been so long since I've experienced anything as a close to live Pre-CU with this update, and we will only keep getting closer and closer. Keep up the good work team, we support you 200%.

I'm just curious, does debugging the current Nova help in the long run? Will the bugs found and fixes made to Nova be applicable to the new OR branch of SWGEmu?

Good questions.

Yes, it helps. Without debugging and logging we could not quickly assess problems and fix them, like we've been doing all day.

Yes, keep reporting bugs. Some will carry over, but not all. The OR will necessitate some changes to code down the line that will affect how things work. That said.. KEEP REPORTING!! =)

What finally allows the server to escape 'deadlocked' status?

thats what we are trying to figure out from the devs:lightsaber:bout to go sith:emperor:

What finally allows the server to escape 'deadlocked' status?

Restart. :D
Nothing else.

It's caused by a crap in the code, some actions are waiting for each other to finish and blah blah we know how it ends, it never ends, I don't think there is a way to fix that on the fly with the server online, but I'm no dev.

Is it considered a bug that the planets are very overpopulated with creatures to be kill't?

Or is that how it was meant to be?

So it has to be manually restarted? That's what I'm not understanding. Doesn't Ekaika have the power to restart the server? Why would he have to say "it'll be this way for a few hours"?

Spectre33
09-15-2009, 09:03 PM
because they are trying to fix the bug that caused the crash so it doesn't just crash again... thus a few hours are needed to fix it.

I think they need to be physically close to the server to restart it, and only Oru and TheAnswer can, that's what we've been told. :/
And "a few hours" until Oru and TA wake up and restart it.

xbang21

well it will prolly do it again after people try storming into the servers so who knows

xbang21
09-15-2009, 09:07 PM
we just have to sit back and let them do there job if we keep bothering them on the forums with this that would waist there time locking all of them so they cant do there work

Ekaika
09-15-2009, 09:09 PM
Eko - When it deadlocks, logs are generated. The two Dev's that work on server stability are in Europe and are probably asleep right now. They'll be around in a few hours, and at that time will check the logs, fix the process bugs, and restart. And around and around we go.

No, I can't start it, neither can 90% of the developers. The reason for this is simple. If we do, it would just deadlock again the next time the same set of variables occurs. It is much more important to stop and fix, than to press through and lose valuable logging/debugging for the sake of playtime. All morning it went up and down as the guys worked out the kinks, but even we have to sleep sometimes =)

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the reply Ekaika, I've been wondering who has physical access to the server, and why they don't just restart it. Yer a smart feller! :D

I would imagine that the server software is deadlocked, not the actual computer, therefore physical access to the machine would not be necessary.

Morning hits england in about 2.5 hours, so I'd say they'd stir awake in about 5 hours at best. Whether or not the server will be bothered with by then, I am in no hurry for XD

I think that's unnecessary. They probably are already well aware that people recognize them as the filth of today's society, that should be enough. They probably cry themselves to sleep at night. ;)

well i played only outside Eisley since the patch but...pre-cu there were a ton of mobs like that, just since before now we had less makes u think that there are more now..but to be honest it was alot like this if i remember correctly :)

I don't think so. If you go outside the cnet gate near the starport and keep heading a little ways straight, you'll come to this huge cluster of spawns like at least 150 creatures or so all in one tiny little area. I smell bug?
Seen this many in a few other areas as well.

Yeah. Coronet is clusterbombed with a ****ton of spawns :| I'd be ok if they were mostly yellow, but they're mostly RAWR IMMA EAT YOU red dots :o

well at least the server can handle a planets worth of spawns in one small area, spreading them out shouldn't be a problem later :)

Great work everyone! Bugs are just a part of Beta phases, and as for myself I would rather play on a beta server that's going up and down every 30 minutes than not have a server at all... Keep it up devs! ;)

amen to all your posts, i remember when i gave up SWG because of all the crap that was being done to it. it was a sad day. i missed it forever, and then i was showd the Emu, many years ago :D i've been following it ever since, and i honestly thought i'd never see this day where pretymuch everything is back. gratned some bugs, and some professions i hear are not available yet *cough* creature handler *cough* but the state of the Emu is far better than it was when i first started playing. back when all there was was anchor-head on tat.

Guys, thanks for sticking with it. <3 you!
