View Full Version : SWGemu Anniversary, and new years update

Hey everyone! I know that we literally just posted an update, but Ramsey felt a new years update would be in order. So the first order of business is Happy New Year! I hope you all have a great time, be safe, and please don't do anything stupid.

And yeah, this is SWGEmu's third anniversary, it was founded in December 2004. So thanks to everyone for having faith and hanging around so long. We promise it won't be much longer!

Secondly, Ritter and Kyle are nearly done with Resources, Surveying, sampling and harvesting. This will allow them to begin work on crafting :D. We should see that update before too long, here's a new video from Ritter.

Next, Voltrox has put in an assortment of things the last week including Weapon/armor slicing, item deletion, radial options for looting/trading and also continued to improve the loot system stuff, fixed some LUA stuff, got decay and repair tools working, did a cloning fix so you don't clone in the middle of no where, got commando/heavy weapons working, AND made an @giveItem command similar to the command in the core1 version of swgemu. All of this should be up on TC before long for testing. Here are some pics:

http://www.swgemu.com/images/commando1.jpg
http://www.swgemu.com/images/commando2.jpg

Ramsey has been working on JTL, he also did some fun stuff that's not really ideal, but cool none the less -- like atmospheric flight.

http://www.swgemu.com/images/atmosphericFlight1.jpg

and I have a quote from him..

"JTL groundwork in core3 is almost done -- it doesn't mean they can fly it quite yet; we need to develop a space zone class for that, since tracking objects in space is different than ground."

Oru and TA have also been working extra hard cleaning code and making sure it's the quality it needs to be in before submitting. Quality assurance is still the name of the game in order to keep things working well. TA Also submitted a full trading patch which will be on TC asap. So go give that a test!

That's about it, so, have a great new year and we'll have another update to you probably in a week or two.

Wow, this is amazing, the progress that has been made in the last couple of years. I have been lurking on this website since 2006, well before you could get here by a search engine. Honestly guys, this project has gone a long way, especially for all the drama that has happened and the fact that it hasn't fallen apart yet. Most projects like this would, but this one is different, I respect you devs.

Excellent update, as usual i have to say. All you guys are so impressive, the way things are moving.

You're not only give us a new hope, but it's already reality.

And by looking how many people on TC, it's amazing.

Oh, and btw, atmospheric flight... so many players would love this. I know it's not part of original SWG, but man, that would really kick another dimension, literrally. Anyway, nice also JTL is worked upon.

awsome, atmospheric flight would be awsome, also, if you would be able to land and souch (for a fee to the planet's space station, or if you want, you could still use the classic ways of travel)

Nice update, keep up the work and we will see this up soon and many playing in no time i'm sure. Happy New Year to all, and Atmospheric flight will be nice if they add it, but they probably will limit it like you can't fire your weapons, but you can fly around and land it were ever there is a flat or clear area.

The video is Divx encoded, so you need to have a codec installed to play it properly. I recommend installing Xvid and letting it decode Divx files.

This is truly excellent progress. While I havn't been with the project as long as some of the others here, I am just as grateful for the gift they are giving the world. As far as changing from the original game, I would like to see the ability to have atmospheric flight (as in it could be on a custom server) but with limitations. What I would really like to see changed from the original game the most is to take out Han Solo as an interactable character and put him in Jabas Palace where he belongs. The game does take place between eps 5 and 6 after all. Anyway, just thought this would be an appropriate time to throw that in. Congrats to the devs on a job well done, I look forward to the next year and what it brings in this project.

Really, really wish, that atmospheric flight stays, or at least stays as an option... always thought that for soe live servers would be too much charge to make it, but taht it was possible... this is just demonstration.

For a small server with mates, would be great to squirmish rogue squadron style :)

That atmospheric flight looks sweet, but I'm afraid it will lead to bad things.

I've always been upset that with the releaseof JTL we couldn't do straffeing runs durring guild wars, but then I can see how allowing atmospheric flight could lead down the path of the soe side. I see this EASILY happening:

Atmospheric flight is left in. Pilots cry for working guns for straffeing runs. Ground game players want armed vehicles to shoot down the jerk pilots who are blasting away all the Bols. Some Jerk takes an artillery pice, and camps out on the other side of the hill near mos eisley, and with a guild mate/friend spotter, starts spamming shots wildly into town homeing in on the buff line.... Pretty soon, there is no more ground game as the pilots have wrecked it being jerks with the heavy spawn areas, and commandos in large tanks are blasting away at the citys hopeing to catch some other guild's members in the aoe durring guild wars. The already lagged out heavily populated space ports now crash from all the explosions. No more happy game.

I could be completly wrong, but once SOE changed to the cu, I was miserable. Doing this seems like that level of change, and is probably not a good thing.

Seaseme
01-02-2008, 10:54 AM
I don't really think atmospheric flight is plausable, mainly because it would be VERY laggy for anyone without a screaming computer. Imagine going that fast on a aswoop or something. He was just messing around, proving it was possible. His real focus is getting the JTL ground-work in so it can be worked on :)

Yeah as cool as it sounds, it would be kinda game unbalancing, we have speeders for travelling :P

Speaking of speeders, will there be any more variations of faster speeders? (There wasnt much choice before) Also, it seems a bit silly that every speeder has at least two seats yet nobody can hop in with the owner. If this is implemented, maybe there could be a popup for someone requesting a ride, or you allow party members in.

Quad-core gaming PCs are quickly becoming the norm. Intel has set a price point that has lower-end (Q6600) flying off shelves. And with the overclockability of the newer Intel chips it's rather easy to take a $600 rig and have it working like a $1200 rig. Soooo...yeah, impliment everything!!

Quad-core gaming PCs are quickly becoming the norm...

No? They're completely worthless for gaming. It's not going to be anywhere near the norm for some years to come. If I'm able to run BOINC, SWG, WoW and have my BOINC work on 2 computing tasks without any major loss of time, why oh why would you ever need a quad-core for gaming? Dual cores aren't even the norm yet, you should check Steam's survey:

http://www.steampowered.com/status/survey.html

I don't know whens the last time anyone has said:

Shoot! This new game is going to be so CPU heavy!

QFE

especially with the new improvements being made to most games, now that the AGEIA PhysX engine is being used. Some companies have realised that you can get amazing quality with the AGEIA engine and run on the more lower end machines with little to no lag at all.. for example Unreal Tournament 3, the game has super high-end cutting edge graphics, yet you can run it on full with lets say a.. 7300 gs, and you won't get a drop in lag.

The point is, game development is getting smarter.. Dual-Core and Quad-Core is too far ahead of its time, and no one will probably use it until their price drops drastically to call it norm.

I don't know whens the last time anyone has said:

Shoot! This new game is going to be so CPU heavy!

Forgive me for being an old lady and out of school for a long time...
I have a dual core HP media center. How does this help me for gaming? Does it automatically adjust to my needs or do I need to make some modifications to get the most out of it?

You should be fine ZabrakWith. What kind of video card do you have? go Start -> Run -> type Dxdiag.exe and press enter.

Go into the Video tab, and it will tell you your video card.

Logged on tonight for the first time in a couple of months and WOW, the progress is great. Been grouping with a few nice guys on Dathomir tonight and I haven't had this much fun playing a MMO since Nov 15th 2005.
(CU was ok on it's deathbed, it was nowhere near pre-cu, but it was ok).

I have for the last month and a half played NGE (God have mercy on my soul).
But tonight when I played SWGEMU, "everything" felt right. The original SWG UI is IMHO the best MMO UI we have ever seen. (Well, WOW has a great UI too, but the game itself sucks).

I am extremely pleased with the progress SWGEMU has done since I last played, but the problems I said would come when they started to spawn has come, you all said I was an idiot when I posted it, but it has come true.

I will explain and link in a post called "The good, the bad and the really GREAT" or some **** like that, but since it is now 11:17 AM and I REALLY need some sleep, I don't want to atempt writing a serious post atm, so it will have to wait until tomorrow. (Man I'm gonna have a problem on monday when I start at work again after this X-mas).

But bottom line is SWGEMU is doing great and I can barely wait for the next TC update.

Time for a new donation me thinks!

Are you serious? SC maxes your PC out? I'm running on a 64-bit ASUS with a GeForce 7600 GT and I run SC on full and my fps doesn't even take a hit. It's a Single-Core machine. I always find it funny when people have dual core machines and they're having so much trouble with games as simple as Supreme Commander lol..

Forgive me for being an old lady and out of school for a long time...

Multiple cores were SUPPOSE to be made to handle seperate parts of operations done with your machine, but since no company other than microsoft takes that into effect it's just scrap-metal for the next 3-4 years. They're very overpriced and over hyped on the market. You could have a 2.4 quadcore, which is suppose to handle most operations at a nice rate, however you're not running with 4 2.4s with most programs, you're running with a single core. There's no real way to adjust this unless the operation is made specifically for it. Dual-Cores and Quad-Cores don't do anything for games atm. The only game I've seen that can handle dual core is Quake Wars. Quake Wars was made so that 1 core handles pure code, and the other handles the physical world, rendering models and effects.

So you can sit up on your 'throne' with multiple core machines, but it doesn't mean anything. The machine you're using will be obsolete in the next few years, and you spent over $400 on it.

:O I guess that's not what I expected to hear. I assumed that a dual core would run much faster than a single core. I thought that the cores would work together in the processes that it runs, thus making the machine faster. Oh well!

ps- Seaseme, I have a GeForce 6600GT, which seems to run SWG(and most games) just fine. I was just curious if I was getting the max capability out of my dual core machine.

Doodz, the secret to multi-core systems lies mostly in the OS. First off, more than a dual core system on XP is retarted! The kernel was only created around a dual cpu design and therefore does not make effective use of anything over that. Second, a 32-bit OS will limit your addressable space and running code again decreasing the effectiveness of a multi-core system. 64-bit Vista is really the ONLY system for more than 2 cores (outside of Windows Server 2003 that is). And yes, more core DOES help with Vista (shhhh all you Vista haters!). I had a dual-core E6300 OC'd to 2.53GHz and it ran very well. Then I dropped in a Q6700 at stock settings (my PSU is a bit dated at this point) and it ran extremely well. All other components of the system were unchanged, I haven't even taken the time to reload the OS yet. Vista will delegate single-threaded code to a core that is idle if there are other functions to be done. This helps alot with netcode on a system with a quad-core CPU. 1 core runs the game engine, 1 core runs the OS and 1 core runs the net code leaving the fourth core idle until needed by another application. This is all documented very well in quad core benchmarks where they run multiple single-threaded apps at the same time.

Oh, and there are 3 games in stores now that will make use of a quad core:
Supreme Commander (although the performance boost is unnoticed)
Crysis (which runs like poop unless you have a quad SLI setup with 4 8800GTXs anyway)
and finally Unreal Tournament III (which has had the biggest improvement from my dualie to my quad).

Sorry I don't have any links, I worked a 12 hour day and don't feel like finding them right now. But the short and skinny of it is if you're not a hardcore gamer wanting to play the newest stuff right away don't bother with the expense of the quad right now.

What about Windows XP 64 bit? How well does that use the other cores? I had problems with Vista not running a lot of my old games, even after setting them to run in Windows XP or Windows 2000 mode. I downloaded a trial of Windows XP 64 bit and most of them seem to work. Any suggestions for me on how I can get these games to work on Vista though? Mostly they are Battlefront 1 and 2 and Battlefield Vietnam.

I hope to God atmospheric flight is not a feature.

The last thing I want to do in a buff line in coronet is see a noob in his starter Z95 hovering above the starport courtyard shooting randomly at people on the ground even though it does no damage, or maybe a good PvP battle get wrecked by one guy in a star fighter hovering and shooting people on the ground.

****ing lame. Pardon my French.

As for everything else though, AMAZING JOB AND KEEP IT UP!!!! <3

The only way I could see atmospheric flight working would be purely for battlefields (if they were fixed/implimented) or traveling across a planet and not being able to get within 500m of a city.

Yeah its easy to see how atmospheric flight could be abused, and not to mention the lag its likely to cause, lol forgot about buff lines been so long since i played, though it would be interesting to utilize commando against the starfighters, anyways big thanks to the developers, can't tell you how much i look forward to roaming the galaxy again

Oh my GOD! Airspeeders would be sooo cool!
Imagine if SOE had added Hoth, and the snowspeeder.
I don't think it would be too freakin hard:
Build the model, give it height boundries, and maybe or maybe not guns...
oh yeah, there's the "make a planet stuff too" but that's no biggie ;D.
